Fourteen

After being inside the bright, loud pub for so long, the nighttime air felt luxurious, and the normally crowded city felt practically deserted.

It was because of that relief I didn’t notice Laurie wasn’t next to me as I crossed the street. Stopping next to the Waterfall Garden, I turned to find him. He’d paused in the middle of the sidewalk, the light of his phone illuminating his handsome features in the darkness.

“Is everything okay?” I checked the road before jogging back over to the other side of the street.

Expression softening, Laurie said, “Oh, sorry. I have a coworker that was talking about some site where he found a virtual assistant. There’s some kind of database. I was just texting to see if he could send me the link.”

Snapping my fingers, I said, “Ah, because since Mathias was a recluse, Kenny must’ve been a virtual assistant and he might be listed there.”

Laurie nodded.

“A jaded assistant getting revenge on his jerk boss sounds like a good motive for murder,” I said, then immediately wanted to take it back. “Sorry, that’s a really callous way to talk about someone we’ve lived around for years getting killed.”

Laurie playfully ran his shoulder into mine. “It’s okay. I know what you meant. It’s hard to see him as a real person, though. He’s been such a myth our whole lives.”

I turned to leave, but Laurie reached out and took my hand. I stopped, glancing back at him.

“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice barely a squeak. Was it just me, or did Laurie seem like he wanted to kiss m—

“Meg, I tried not to say anything in there because I didn’t want to ruin the fun but…” His shoulders slumped forward as he rubbed at his arm, unable to meet my eyes.

Okaaay, so not a kiss.

His flighty gaze finally locked on to mine. “I just can’t believe you’re quitting art. What are you going to do instead?”

“Not you too.” I groaned.

He scratched at his nose, hiding a smile. “I’m guessing Penny isn’t taking the decision well?”

Coughing, I said, “Yeah, she’s not thrilled.” The truth was, Penny was the least of my worries. I was much more affected by the ghost chirping in my ear all day, every day.

“I can’t imagine Meg Dawson not being a famous artist.” He ran his knuckles along his stubbly jawline. “You’re so talented, and I just want to know what happened in New York that made you decide that wasn’t the truth.”

Letting out a long exhale, I told him, “Laurie, it’s so kind of everyone in my life to root for me so fiercely, but none of you can be objective about my art. You, Penny, everyone at the Morrisey, you’re all too close to me. What happened is that I heard the truth from real professionals in the field.”

We started walking again, moving in silence for a few moments as we paid attention to where we were stepping on the jarring Seattle sidewalks.

“I think maybe it’s more about you giving up.
